“University Patents are Transforming into Value”

The main theme of the event organized by Ege University Science Technology Application and Research Center (EBİLTEM) and supported by our Foundation in 2012 was Transforming University Patents into Value. The 2nd AEGEAN R&D AND TECHNOLOGY DAYS was held in Izmir on November 28-30, 2012.

AREGE’ aimed to bring together universities and different segments of society to evaluate university patents and to introduce commercializable patents and utility models to industry and investors.

Following the Opening Speech of Aegean University Rector Prof. Dr. Candeğer Yılmaz, Minister of Science, Industry and Technology Nihat Ergün emphasized the need to increase high-technology product exports via teleconference and said, “We want to be one of the world’s largest economies. For this, we need to increase the share of R&D activities in national income to 3 percent. Previously, R&D expenditures were at 0.5 percent. We have currently reached 1 percent. While doing this, we also need to increase high-technology product exports from 5 percent to 20 percent. We are continuing our work as a ministry to do this,” he said.

In AreGE2; With the parallel events of “Patent Tent”, “Patent Tunnel” and “Patent Workshop”, participants were informed about patent processes, while the first steps of patent research were taken with experts in one-on-one interviews. As part of the event, participants who made it to the finals competed to receive investment for their projects by presenting their patents to angel investors with the concept of “Treasure Island”.

There were 129 applications from 42 different universities in 79 different fields and they competed for the Elginkan Foundation’s 35,000 TL prize. The finalists in three different categories received their awards on the last day of the event.
